About David Short

My name is David Short. I am married and have 3 girls, a 6 year old and twin girls that will be 2 in December. My wife and I have been married for 9 years and love raising our family here in Liberal, Kansas.

I was born and raised in Topeka, Kansas and moved to Liberal in 2005. My wife and I love the small town atmosphere here in Liberal and feel it is a wonderful school district for our children and great community to raise a family.

I did not know that teaching was my calling until 2010 when I took a chance and accepted a job as the computer para at MacArthur Elementary. At MacArthur I witnessed amazing teachers at work and saw the differences they were making in the lives of the children. I attended Newman University while working there and graduated in December of 2012. Upon graduating I was offered a job at Sunflower Intermediate as a 6th grade teacher, which I accepted. I have been teaching 6th grade here at Sunflower ever since and my love for my job and my students has increased each year.

In addition to teaching my students what they need to know in math, social studies and writing to prepare them the best I can for the future, I also do what I can to teach my students the importance of responsibility and teamwork. I have always felt that these are important qualities to succeed in life. I believe that students need to understand that they are responsible for their actions, whether good or bad. If they want something then they need to work for it in order for it to happen. They should not expect things to just be given to them. I also teach them that they must take responsibility for any mistakes they make. I want my students to know that it is ok to make mistakes as long as they own up to them. Integrity is extremely important and I want my students to want to be responsible and do what is expected of them not only when they are being watched but also when they are on their own and nobody is watching. Teamwork is important as well because kids these days need to understand that they shouldn't only look out for themselves. I want them to look out for the best interests of those around them as well as their own. I use teamwork throughout the year to help my students learn. I like to create a competitive atmosphere where every students wants to achieve their very best and not just settle for what they think they can do. I will push my students to achieve at their highest potential. A quote that I love and refer to many times in my class is, "If I accept you as you are, I will make you worse; however, if I treat you as though you are what you are capable of becoming, I help you become that."

I love sports and enjoy bringing sports into the classroom. My favorite teams are the Denver Broncos, the Kansas Jayhawks, and the Kansas City Royals. I enjoy students who are fans of the same team as well as students who like other teams so we can have some fun conversations and debates. Sports is a great way for kids to practice and learn the importance of teamwork and I encourage my students to get involved in sports through community programs and school activities in future years.
